Stackable Crochet Pumpkins – A Fun Fall Decor Idea

Is it too early to think about fall decorations? Maybe not – at least not for Ursula, as she loves fall! As life slows down, the heatwaves are finally over, the trees start showing all those magnificent autumn colors, and the evenings are perfect for a cup of cocoa, a good movie, and a crochet or knitting project. So over the next few weeks, we’ll share some fall project ideas that you can try!

For this post, we’re showing you two sets of crochet pumpkins, both available in three sizes. They look lovely on their own, for example on a dresser or shelf, but you can also put all three sizes together in a basket or use them as a fall table centerpiece.

And here is the fun part: you can also stack them on top of each other! The three sizes are different enough that they sit nicely on top of one another, making a cute stacked pumpkin decor. Later in the season, they can also be used as Halloween or Thanksgiving table decorations.

Choose the Version That Suits Your Skill Level

You can choose between two versions depending on your crochet experience and the look you prefer.

The first set has a cinnamon stick stem and is suitable for complete beginners. You only need basic crochet skills to make these pumpkins. Also you can decorate them however you like. Use a cinnamon stick, a small twig, or a wine cork for the stem, and add some ribbon or twine for the tendrils. For our pumpkins, the cinnamon sticks stayed nicely in place without any glue, so we didn’t use anything to secure them.

If you want to use them as a stacked pumpkin centerpiece, you can leave the stems off the two lower pumpkins and only decorate the top one. This way, the pumpkins sit better on top of each other.

The second version has a crocheted stem and crocheted tendrils. We would call this one beginner/intermediate, as it is still suitable for beginners who already have a little experience with crochet. It might not be the best choice as a very first crochet project, but if you have made a few projects before, you should be fine. With this version, you can make the stems for all three pumpkins, as the crocheted stems are soft and flatten a little when the pumpkins are stacked, so they still sit nicely on top of each other.

Our Color Combinations

For the version with the crocheted stem and tendrils, we made our sample set with a soft, harmonious autumn palette. The large pumpkin at the bottom is rust, the medium pumpkin is a deep mustard yellow, and the smallest one on top is off-white. We used a soft medium brown for all the stems and tendrils, which worked nicely with all three colors. There is still enough contrast for each pumpkin to stand out.

For the cinnamon stick version, we chose yellows instead, as we love yellow – as you can probably tell from our branding. (Maybe we’re slowly becoming a little too yellow? No, there’s no such thing, yellow is such a happy color, and there’s never enough of it in the world… 🌞😄)
So, the large pumpkin is a brighter yellow, the medium one is mustard yellow, and the smallest one is off-white. These colors work beautifully with the warm brown of the cinnamon sticks and twine.

What Yarn To Use?

For these pumpkins, we used a wool blend yarn made from 50% sheep wool and 50% acrylic. We love how this yarn gives the pumpkins a slightly fuzzy look and a soft, matte texture. You can make beautiful crochet pumpkin decorations with many different types of yarn, including acrylic, cotton, or 100% wool. We would recommend choosing a yarn without much shine or sheen. For us, wool or a wool blend gives the pumpkins the nicest cozy, autumnal look.
