We love crochet ghosts, especially when they are more cute than scary! These two little ghosts both wear witch hats and have cheerful faces, and they are both beginner-friendly and require no sewing for the body parts.
We designed the larger Ghost Plush Toy in the fall of 2023. We thought it would be a good size for children to play with. The following year, we came up with the idea of the Mini Ghost, a smaller and quicker project with a simpler shape, and an even better option if you’re making items for a craft fair.
If, like us, you don’t particularly enjoy sewing amigurumi parts together, we think you’re going to love these two!

Ghost Plush Toy with Witch Hat
We wanted to create a ghost that would be a nice size for children to play with, while still looking good as a Halloween decoration.
The original version looked quite different and was spookier than cute… 😄 So the next year we gave it a little makeover: we made the head rounder, the neck thinner, the eyes smaller, and added a sweet little smile. We also changed the witch hat to make it taller, with a curly tip.
The result is a bit more kawaii and, honestly, much more like the kind of happy little ghost we had in mind from the beginning. ☺️

It measures about 8.6 inches / 22 cm tall including the hat, so it is a nice size for children to hold and play with, but it also looks great as a Halloween decoration.
It doesn’t require too much yarn. You need approximately 74 yards / 68 m of bulky-weight chenille yarn in total, including both the white and black, so if you have half a skein of white plush yarn left in your stash, you will have more than enough for the ghost.
Mini Ghost with Witch Hat
The Mini Ghost has a different shape, more like the classic cartoon ghost we all picture: a little floating white sheet with a tiny arm peeking out. 👻
At 5.9 inches / 15 cm tall including the witch hat, it makes a cute little plushie or decoration. We designed this one the year after the first ghost because we thought it would be fun to have an even quicker and simpler ghost to make. It is especially nice when you want a small Halloween project without using much yarn.

Only 39 yards / 36 m of plush yarn is needed in total. For example, if you have a skein of white yarn and a skein of purple yarn, you can make five of these little ghosts, depending of course on your yarn brand and gauge. Five little ghosts from that amount of yarn? Pretty amazing!
That also makes the Mini Ghost a fun project when you’re preparing for a holiday craft fair. You can make several of them without spending a huge amount of time on each one, and we think a whole row of little ghosts lined up on your craft table would look pretty cute. 🙂
Ways to Use Your Crochet Ghosts for Halloween
First and foremost, both of these crochet ghosts make cute little toys. If you have small children or grandchildren, don’t be surprised if they quickly claim one as their own. 😄
They can also make sweet Halloween gifts for loved ones. (Imagine a little ghost waiting for a child you love who comes trick-or-treating at your door!)
Of course, they can also be used as Halloween decorations. Put them on a shelf, add one to your Halloween table, or display them together with your other fall decor. The Mini Ghost is also small enough to use as a hanging decoration, which gives you another way to display it.
And if you’re making items for a craft fair, the Mini Ghost is especially practical. Since it is simple to make and doesn’t use much yarn, you can easily make several, and a group of them together would make a fun Halloween display.
You can also mix and match them with other crochet Halloween decorations. We think they’d look especially cute alongside our crochet pumpkins and bats. 😉

Why We Love No-Sew Crochet Amigurumi
So we don’t actually hate sewing… We have crochet patterns that require some sewing, and we’re happy to do it when the design calls for it. What we don’t particularly like is finishing an amigurumi, putting all the pieces in front of us, and then having to figure out exactly where the arms and legs should go – check whether they are at the same height, make sure they look symmetrical, and then try not to sew one of them on slightly wonky. When you’re making the same plushie more than once, you have to eyeball the placement every single time, so the finished toys can end up looking different from one another.
That’s one of the main reasons we love designing no-sew amigurumi! When we design a no-sew plushie, we test the placement of each body part and tell you exactly which stitch it should be attached to while you’re crocheting. That means you don’t have to guess where an arm or leg should go, and you can get the same look each time you make the pattern.
We do the same thing with the safety eyes. In the pattern instructions, we tell you exactly which stitch to place them into on the relevant round. So you don’t have to stand there with your finished head wondering if the eyes look right. You already know exactly where they go.
That’s really why we love no-sew amigurumi. You can just keep crocheting, and you don’t have all that sewing waiting for you at the end. The only sewing involved is adding the mouth and blush.
If you’d like to make your own, the crochet patterns are available in our shops.
